Abstract
Knowledge of the biology of thyroid cancer is important to its diagnosis as well as to its treatment. Cancer of the thyroid is not a single entity but a spectrum of lesions with highly variable biologic potentials.
Encapsulated follicular adenocarcinoma of the thyroid behaves essentially as a benign disease and is accompanied by a near-normal life expectancy. Similarly, well differentiated papillary follicular adenocarcinoma with cervical lymphnode metastases of third decade women may pursue a remarkably indolent course. In contrast, a tumor of identical morphology but arising later in life or in the male usually is much more aggressive and may cause death in a few years. Undifferentiated cancers are usually associated with a rapid progression and early demise. It is obvious that all therapeutic measures must be not only concordant but also evaluated with reference to the natural history of the disease.
A case of papillary adenocarcinoma is reported with picture of pathological slide.
